Tribeca All Access® 2007
Soo Hugh received her MFA from the University of Southern California, where she was awarded the Cinema Circulus Prize for excellence in filmmaking. At USC, her documentary short “Alternate Currents” was chosen to receive full funding by the University. “Alternate Currents” follows Soo and her crew through the wacky, uncertain terrain of “outsider” science and what it says about who we are.
Soo has produced a number of music videos and commercials, most recently an ad for Nissan’s Quest Vehicle, part of the Shift 2.0 campaign. The spot launched in October. She also produced the music video “Beautiful Wreck” for Vanguard Records and singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins, whose single ”Lullaby” was a number one hit a few years ago. The video played in heavy rotation on VH1 and CMT.
In 2005 Soo was commissioned to direct a film for the Julliard Opera Company’s production of Nathaniel West’s “Miss Lonelyhearts.” Directed by visionary Ken Cazan and featuring music from award-winning composer Lowell Lieberman and a libretto by Pulitzer-winning poet JD McClatchey, the opera opened in NYC in April to strong reviews. It will travel to Los Angeles and Cincinnati in late 2007.
Previously, Soo directed a music video for Sony Classical Music’s tribute DVD to Ennio Morricone, featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The video played in Europe and was part of a traveling concert series. The launch of the DVD was marked by a live concert performance with Yo-Yo Ma, where the music videos were played on a projected screen.
Soo received her BA from Yale University, where she was awarded Best Film for her senior project and was nominated for the prestigious Sudler Prize for highest artistic merit. She lives in Los Angeles and is currently developing a feature project.
