Alonso Filomeno Mayo is a Film & Journalism graduate from the University of Lima, Peru, and has recently completed the Film Directing program at the American Film Institute. He has lived and studied in Peru and Lawrence, Kansas. He was creative director and founder of MANZANA AZUL, a digital video production company in Peru that specialized in documentaries and commercial videos. His music video ALAS HUMANAS for Peruvian rock band INDIGO was in rotation on MTV Latin America in 2001. His short film SILENCIO (2002) participated in Latino Film Festivals around the world and won the Robert Altman prize in the Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee.
During his first year at AFI he directed the short films ON LOVE, WHISPER and HER TREMBLING HEART. He also wrote WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, a screenplay based on Bolivian novelist EDMUNDO PAZ-SOLDAN’s short story LAZOS DE FAMILIA. Alonso directed WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON in October 2003, it featured JEFF LICON (The Brothers Garcia) and JOSE YENQUE (Traffic). WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON was official selection of Deauville Festival of American Film, Times bfi London Film Festival, Havana Film Festival, among many others. WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON screened on SHOWTIME NETWORKS in October 2004 as part of its Latino Filmmakers Showcase, and will screen in 2005 on SiTV and CANAL+.
Alonso received a 2004 DGA Student Film Award. His short film ANYONE was a finalist in ESQUIRE Magazine’s Celluloid Style Film Competition. Alonso recently completed his second AFI thesis film KEEPER OF THE PAST, a psychological thriller he wrote and directed in May 2004. It stars ADAM RODRIGUEZ (CSI:Miami) and STEVEN BAUER (Scarface). Alonso is currently working on the feature screenplay of KEEPER OF THE PAST and also developing the soccer drama EL MACHITO.
EL MACHITO is a drama that follows Ray Marshall, an ex English soccer player that’s adjusting to his new life as a talent scout. Ray battles a divorce, a drinking problem, and is in a fight to save his job since his boss decided to send him to Peru in an impossible mission to draft Claudio Quezada, a hot soccer player. Ray’s outlook begins to change when he discovers a young player that calls himself “Machito” and who is about to be kicked off his team because of his recklessness, temper and attitude. But Machito’s passion for the game reminds Ray of somebody he used to know: himself.
